Frequently asked questions

Q. Am I too old or too young to learn to play an instrument?

A. Jon has taught people of all ages (from 8 to 80) and believes that absolutely anyone, of any age, can learn to play an instrument. Interestingly, many of his older students often, initially, believe that they may be too old to learn an instrument, only to find that they pick up new skills very quickly.

So, whether you're a young person looking to learn an instrument for the first time or someone who's always wanted to be able to sit down and play the songs that you love, this is the 'right time' to begin and have fun!

Q. What's the difference between learning/playing the Keyboard as opposed to the Piano?

A. This is a very common question and it's surprising how many people (even musicians) don't know the answer. In simple terms, both types of instruments look similar in appearance.

However, both may be played with totally different techniques. Keyboards often have rhythms, backing sounds, accompaniment sounds and can frequently play a wide range of instrument sounds, ranging from strings, organ sounds, brass/woodwind sounds, piano sounds, guitar sounds, synth sounds and hundreds more.

Keyboards also feature effects, are able to play multiple sounds at the same time, have the ability to use headphones for quiet practice, generally have touch sensitive keyboards, are portable and offer lots of other features. So, if you're looking to be play songs quickly and want to sound like a 'whole band', learning the keyboard may be the best path for you.

Alternatively, an acoustic piano will generally play a single piano sound, will need regular tuning/maintenance and of course, isn't portable (unless it's an electronic piano). Of course, a high-quality acoustic piano can sound excellent, once the player is proficient and experienced and is ideal, especially if you want to focus on classical music. So, in the end, it will come down to personal preference/choice.

If you're unsure which is the right path for you, please speak to Jon and he will be happy to guide you.

Q. How long will it take before I'm able to play songs?

A. Once you've learned some music basics and understand how to use the instrument that you're learning, you will be surprised how quickly you will start playing songs that you recognize. Generally, pupils will be playing songs within the first two to three lessons. Then, as you become more and more proficient, your song repertoire will grow quickly. The great thing is that everyone can learn at their own pace. Progress will often be in direct relation to how much you play your instrument and practice.

Q. How much will each lesson cost and how long do they last?

A. Individual lessons last for 1 hour and only cost $68. If lessons are booked and paid in advance, as a group of 6 lessons, the cost of each lesson is reduced to only $60.

Q. Will I need my own instrument?

A. Yes, this will be critical, as you will not be able to practice and progress, if you don't have your own instrument. Don't worry if you need help and guidance about which instrument will be best for you, as Jon will guide you about this.

So, if you already have an instrument, that's great! If, however, you don't have an instrument yet, please speak to Jon before you purchase one, as you want to ensure that your new instrument is within your budget and will be appropriate for your needs. Plus, remember, that there is a big difference between keyboards and pianos.

Q. Where do lessons take place and how frequently should they be?

A. Lessons take place in Jon's home studio in Menifee. It is recommended that lessons should be weekly (as that will give students an opportunity to practice newly acquired songs/techniques). If, however, someone wants to prepare for a special occasion and/or performance, it may be beneficial to request extra lessons (subject to availability).

Q. Why does Jon teach beginners, as opposed to advanced players.

A. Jon prefers to teach keyboard/piano beginners, as this ensures that their progress is structured and comprehensive and also ensures that his students don't have to spend/waste time correcting and overcoming mistakes and bad habits that they might have learned in the past.

Q. What type of Keyboards will I learn on during my lesson?

A. You will learn on professional quality Keyboards, as they will enable to use and experience the best sounds and latest technologies. They will also help you, if desired, to gradually learn advanced playing techniques (i.e. using aftertouch, split points, modulation, pitch bending, sound layering and sound design).
